The average time an employer spends giving a resume a first glance is 5 to 10 seconds. Since your resume provides that vital first impression and may be the only representation of yourself a potential employer sees, it is vital that it is clear and concise.

  • Make your resume easy to read.
  • Make sure important information (name, employer, and position) jump off the page with bold face. Don't use bold for more minor details, like dates.
  • Use bold caps for companies, upper and lower case bold  for positions.
  • Make use of bullets.
  • Include dates.
  • Leave plenty of space between the entries.
  • Leave out headers and footers, because your resume will be reformated on our letterhead anyway.
  • Only use 12-point conventional fonts, like Times New Roman.
  • Include metrics for any appropriate descriptions.
  • Be sure to account for all the time since your most recent degree, even if you were workign in an unrelated area.

Remember, the more you write, the less they'll read.

The less you write, the more they'll read.
